Instagram announced the hiding of likes in April this year and the first test was rolled out in Canada in May (which is still going). Now, it's Australia's turn.
The official reason given for this update?
To shift the focus from likes to connection and quality content.
Worth noting: other people can't see the number of likes your post has received, but you can still see your stats by clicking the little circles ('liked by x and others') or the blue 'View Insights' text under your photo.
So, what does this mean for us?
It's time to stop obsessing over the vanity metric of likes and start concentrating on:
Publishing your content across all platforms
Creating quality content that sparks engagement
Interacting with your followers and on other people's accounts
And... using this time to experiment! Try new things and see how they go.
Focus on the metrics that matter
If you've never really looked at your insights, now's the time to start. Review the stats of your content, in particular:
profile and website visits
Hot tip: at the end of each month, look at the posts that had the most engagement. Take note of what worked and apply those learnings to the new content you create.
My thoughts on this...
It's unclear how long this trial is going to last and whether Instagram will bring back likes, but one thing's for sure, it'll be here for a while so you may as well use this time to experiment, have fun and focus on why you're on Instagram.
